Sociology 1010
STRUCTURAL FUNCTIONALISM is a category of sociology that defines society as a complex and interrelated system with symbiotic parts. It addresses society as a whole in terms of the function of its norms, customs, traditions and institutions but as an entity significantly influenced by it's various "moving parts."
SYMBOLIC INTERACTION is a category of sociology that subscribes to the concept that humans will act toward things on the basis of the meanings they ascribe to those things. It addresses society as an environment where learned and subscribed meaning is a primary driver for behavior.
CONFLICT THEORY is a concept in sociology that emphasizes the political, material or standing of a social group and the socially accepted, perceived norms ascribed to them. Conflict theories highlight contrasting social structures and stratification within historically dominant ideologies.
Sociology 1010
Sociology is a fascinating subject which deals with the study of human behavior and social structure of our nation and world. Cultural differences such as ethnicity, gender, age, politics and religion are a major components of social structure. Here in America, we live in a pluralistic nation where diversity is prevalent. Every society is built on the bases of what is important for them and the survival of it's members. Sociology offers insight into areas and cultures of the world we may otherwise never see and/or experience. Societies can be very different and maybe very much alike in members and function. Each community develops their own set of norms for members to live and abide by. Although, people do deviate from the norms; they are a set of standards which we should abide by. The study of society and its structural balance can seem very complicated and quite disturbing at times. I find the social class structure to be the biggest problem with our nation today. Americans are finding the gap between rich and poor is getting bigger with no signs of letting up. This affects the way we look at ourselves and how important we are and our place in society.
The struggle for power, resources and recognition continually propels the threat of war between the Industrialized and Most Industrialized nations. The least industrialized nations, of our world, are still living in poor conditions, lack of food, little medical or health facilities and they continue to have the highest birthrates in the world. Whether it be private or public contributions being solicited to help these countries, its hard to comprehend since our own nation has similar problems( just not as apparent). Is our society too proud to admit we have social problems? Our society was built on strong beliefs and a sense of pride for our country and it's people. Why is poverty and starvation in the U.S. a problem that is not being addressed? We know how society works, yet the biggest problems we face continually get pushed aside. No one wants this to be the "The land of the free and mostly poor". The gap between rich and poor, our health insurance issues, and social security issues are among the top issues which need to be addressed with new political views to develop and revamp the current social problems.
Diversity is one important aspects of our world today. The United States is a multicultural nation with a number spoken languages. People have migrated from all over the world to be part of the free world. It's important for everyone to have an open mind and appreciate the many different people that make up our society. Racism needs to be a thing of the past. The Media has a strong hold on our views so with the right moral attitudes racism and hate crimes can all be a thing of the past. Reflecting to the past should help us to not repeat the sames mistakes we've already made. The world can work together so we can all cohabit ate in this world together. Population growth demands we find new ways to manufacture the things needed for everyone to survive, keeping the safety of Earth in mind. Our attention needs to focus on the preservation of resources and more development of green energy sources vital for the preservation of Earth. Depletion of our natural resources is now a global problem that needs to be addressed. The world needs to work for a better environment and a source of sustainable green energy for the future. In 50 years from now, I hope that I've contributed to something important for my children and the rest of the world's survival.
