Reflective Writing
As part of my academic progress at Salt Lake Community College, my course studies include Writing 1010. Throughout the course we learned how to improve on personal writing skills including effective sentencing, clarifying writing techniques, summarizing, reflective writings, and research development. We also studied how rhetorical appeals are used to analyze and respond to another person’s directive that characterizes the information within the context of their oral and written presentation. This process helped me develop better critical thinking skills consistent with the daily, writing assignments which have enabled me to write creatively with more clarity.
Initially, we learned how to summarize information by expressing the main points of the authors’ writings using our own words. In conjunction to this we incorporated rhetorical appeals of logos, ethos, pathos, and kairos to understand the characteristics of the author. This includes the tone of the presentation relevant to their perspectives and the intended audience. Along with rhetorical analysis progression, I wrote a reflective essay recounting an experience that impacted my life, in the hope it taught a lesson that others could appreciate. These assignments were given simultaneously to assist us with developing our organizational skills and writing style. This process helped me improve my sentence structuring and grammar, while the in-class writings projects and peer reviews helped broaden my perspective by comparing and contrasting the ideas of other class-mates while doing so within a group dynamic.
The final exploration project combined the learned writing skills I learned throughout the course agenda and source research to create a question defining an issue currently being debated within society. Through extensive research, I provided an annotated bibliography for six reliable sources and out of those I chose three debating my topic. The debate needed to be a larger conversation going on in the society today. The thorough instruction and relentless writing assignments improved my writing skills, adding quality to my final project. I thought my issue was important to most members of society and the perspectives I provided strengthened an added depth to the debate.
The information I learned in Writing 1010 has enhanced my writing skills in many ways. Overlapping writing assignments helped me to progressively improve on the objectives for my essays. The information I learned in this class connects to other courses by incorporating social issues and current events that affect our world. The knowledge I have acquired will be applied to other courses pertaining to my line of study. If I had more time I would improve on sentence structure more consistent with academic terminology. I completed all the assignments through continual drafting then enhancing the information within my writings. This course is important to my goals and progress at SLCC assistant with other course initiatives where I will apply the skills learned in writing. I am proud of my achievements at SLCC and intend to use the knowledge I’ve gained to further my career.
